Where Does Physical Therapy Fit Into Addressing the Opioid Crisis?

Physical Therapists (PTs) play a crucial role in combating the opioid epidemic through their specialized training and holistic approach to pain management. With expertise in non-invasive, non-pharmacologic treatments, PTs provide comprehensive care within a biopsychosocial framework. Their work addresses the limitations of pharmacologic and passive pain interventions often rooted in a purely biological model of pain. PTs are uniquely positioned to bridge gaps in pain assessment and management, while also serving as educators for communities, healthcare providers, policy-makers, employers, and government agencies.

  • Educating Stakeholders: PTs can educate the public and various stakeholders—such as healthcare providers, policy-makers, employers, and community groups—on effective, non-pharmacologic pain management strategies.
  • Comprehensive Pain Management: By addressing pain from a biopsychosocial perspective, PTs promote sustainable, evidence-based treatments that reduce reliance on opioids.
